Hello, I’m Shizue, a member of the Rights Team at Sunmark.
March 3rd is Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival) or Momo-no-sekku (Girls’ Day or Peach Festival) in Japan. On that day we pray for the health and happiness of girls.
I have two daughters, so I prepare for that day every year. I start displaying the Hina dolls before March 3rd, and then on the day itself, I cook Hinamatsuri dishes with nanohana (rape blossoms), hamaguri (clams), and other traditional ingredients.
Hina dolls are believed to protect their owner, so I bought the dolls to my first daughter.
When I had my second daughter, I couldn’t decide what to do about Hina dolls. I wanted to get them to each daughter, but I didn’t want to buy two of the same sets of dolls.
Then I remembered hearing that in Fukuoka, in Kyushu, the display of Hinamatsuri dolls is different from the one in Tokyo. The dolls are displayed with Sagemon, beautiful handmade balls and other objects, in the city of Yanagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture.
I went straight to Yanagawa to buy Sagemon.
Sagemon are completely handmade, and a big, colorful ball is typical. I was able to buy my favorite ones in Yanagawa.
The time for displaying Hina dolls and Sagemon is short, but I will continue giving my love to them all year long.

I turned 40 just before I finished editing this book and felt a wave of determination. “I need to figure out a way to lose weight!” Actually, just about a year ago, I, along with a friend of mine of the same age, decided to join a personal training program. We thought that if we paid a lot of money, we would be motivated to work hard, but it was tough to lose weight in the end. I met Professor Bones just as I was ready to give up and accept being overweight for the rest of my life.
