Witnessing hundreds of people on the verge of death helped the author realize that instinct and health are closely related. Actually, eating and sleeping, both absolutely necessary for life, are not the only actions governed by instinct. It is now known that complex actions carried out by humans, such as working, learning, playing and thinking, are also products of instinct. In other words, our everyday lives are rooted in and built upon instinct. For that reason, we need to know how to correctly work with our instincts so that we are able to live healthy, fulfilled lives.
In this book, the author teaches us how to apply the 11 instincts necessary for health, including breathing, immunity, and elimination, using actual examples of patients who practiced the methods with success.
The word "instinct" seems very vague and might be difficult to understand. Also, there are probably many people who think that instincts are more characteristic of animals than of humans. This book is especially recommended to those who feel that way.
From the Table of Contents:
- Being hungry can make you youthful again
- We are sustained by the "lizard" within us
- You won't be able to live long and healthy if your heart is overburdened
- Why you are less likely to snore if you speak loudly
- Wake up at your regular time even when you sleep less
- Why keeping your stomach warm can save your life
- 15 minutes in the bathroom after breakfast is good for your health
- 15 seconds of muscle training at a time is enough
- Eating a meal and a half each day leads to a healthy mind and body
A word from the editor:
It's hard to imagine, looking at Dr. Nagano now, but he used to have the typical appearance of someone suffering from metabolic syndrome. By applying the health management method he introduces in this book, he was able to lose a whopping 12 kilograms. When I met him again recently, he had lost another 3 kilograms. Well, I guess I'll have to try it too! I decided that it's time for me to stop calling myself chubby--though my BMI indicates that I'm one step shy of obese--and take a lesson from Dr. Nagano. I'm going to lose some weight!
Author:Masashi Nagano
Dr.Nagano is the director of the Nerima Sakuradai Clinic.
He has been certified by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine (as a general medicine practitioner), the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (as a practitioner and instructor), and the Japanese Society of Nephrology (as a practitioner).
Born in 1958, Dr. Nagano graduated from Saga Medical School and began working at Mitsui Memorial Hospital before becoming assistant director at a private hospital in Tokyo, after which he established the Nerima Sakuradai Clinic. Ever since he became a doctor, his creed has been to practice medicine in the field, and he continues to do so even now.
Also, in his second year as a medical resident, he became the first acting editor-in-chief of The Internal Medicine Resident Practical Manual (Bunkodo). After that, he founded Medical Brain with his colleagues from medical school in the early '90s, at a time when transparency had not yet been established in medicine. With the goal of having the most open practice possible, they welcomed the general public and provided medical consultation, launched a medical information fax service, and set up a website where people could exchange opinions.
Furthermore, Dr. Nagano, who actually developed a proprietary electronic medical record before such records became widely accepted, is also committed to improving efficiency and convenience in medical treatments.
